Guest Post – Gender Issues

Here’s a guest post from my friend Ebony regarding the topic of gender shopping, I’ll be back next week with regular posts I promise 😛 so without further ado –
The issue surrounding gender stereotyping and other such issues have always been quite close to my heart, but I never thought that I would end up feeling strongly about them as to write an article (or blog post, whatever you wish to call it) about it! However, through both positive and negative incidents in my life, I formed a strong opinion and this is what prompts me to do this. To sit at a computer at 11:30pm and try and organise my opinions, memories and arguments into something vaguely cohesive and hopefully interesting. It will hardly be an essay of sociological issues, but I hope that it gives you, dear reader, an insight to my experiences and thoughts. The conclusions I leave to you- I do not expect to swerve your thoughts, only to give you another point of view.
I had two polarising schools of thought on gender when growing up; my father’s side of the family, who possessed more conservative views when it came to gender, and sexuality for that matter. Girls must wear pretty dresses and have long hair, play with dolls, and generally thought of as delicate little things. Boys are the rough-and-tumble ones, must be seen in masculine colours and, of course, MUST HAVE SHORT HAIR. Because God forbid that they were “mistaken for a pouf.” To add context to these views, these people were born and bred in Devon, where intolerance is rife in a country which has shown itself to be much more progressive in recent years (gay marriage, anyone?!).
Then, on the opposite side, there is my mother’s side, whom I believe I draw most of my views from. These people are the strong, independent women that Beyoncé sings about. Everyone can look and be how they want to be, because no one should be worried about how society wants to label them.
And so, with a bit of context out of the way, I come to the crux of my point.

I, like many people, have a shaved head. The unusual thing about this is that I am a woman(ish)- I prefer to be thought of as androgynous/gender fluid but am generally perceived as female by family and peers- I haven’t really talked my feelings through with anyone except close friends, and even then only a bit. But I was astounded at the reactions that I overhear on this subject; even the positive ones could sometimes end up being back handed or inwardly insulting.
I’ll use for my example the one that I received first, namely a woman sat near me at the salon where I had it done. She was watching me avidly as my stylist got the clippers out and got to work-
“You’re being so brave.”
Why? Why should having shorter hair be considered brave? Bravery is going to fight in a war for the good of your country, or fighting a terrible disease. Not having an unusual flipping haircut. HAIR GROWS BACK, for God’s sake. I don’t like it, no worries, it’ll be back soon. Is it because she thought I’d be judged, because I appear to be female? This seems likely, and also incredibly wrong. From birth, society stamps girls with a need to have long hair- and become incredibly attached (emotionally, I mean!) to their long hair. I certainly can’t say this is true of everyone, I know several people who slipped through the radar, and I applaud them. I’m not demanding that every woman chops off their locks, I only point out that we shouldn’t encourage the ‘short hair is for boys, long hair is for girls’ stereotype.
I have two sisters, and the first thing they said to me upon seeing my hair (or lack thereof) was, “You look like a BOYYYY!!” And this is what we need to change; Children need to be taught that any hairstyle can be for any gender- and gender identity should not be forced upon them.
I’ve been on this Earth for 17 years, and I’ve had to close my ears to a LOT of ignorance towards my appearance, and that’s made me more outspoken than ever; the more I receive the backhanded comments, the more I proclaim “It’s all good! It’s all good and fine and dandy!” Because although I don’t care what you think of me, I do care how you carry that belief forward. An example of some of the things I have experienced:
“LOL, that’s a dyke’s haircut.”
“I can’t tell whether that’s a really pretty boy or a really ugly girl.”
“But the long hair made you look so FEMININE.”
Firstly. Can we just stop using the word dyke, like RIGHT NOW. Horrible and offensive, so stop or leave, please. I have no problems with being called a lesbian- I’m bisexual, so I guess they were half-right(ish). But stereotyping a whole group of people to one (in retrospect, extremely bad- it was a Beatles bowl cut) hairstyle isn’t okay, they come in all shapes and sizes like EVERYONE ELSE. C’mon guys, it’s 2015. I thought we’d established this.
The second one- again, no problems with sort-of being called male; I feel somewhere in between the two gender binaries. However, I am concerned with their potentially narrow view of what females and males look like. Gender identity is a spectrum, not a set of boxes with appearance tick-lists.
And the last- just no. HELL NO. Don’t you DARE go there. I’ve explained myself clearly enough on this issue- to think that this came from a member of my family breaks me a little inside. This, in short, is why I feel I cannot talk to my family about how I feel yet. Simple narrow-mindedness.

So, to conclude. We don’t need a revolution, or a surge of huge gestures. We only need to stop the gender stereotyping that is pressed upon children from birth. All that needs to be done is to stop telling children “This is for boys, that is for girls,”- because everything is meant for everyone. We need to stop worrying “but this might make me look like a girl/boy.” Like what? Beautiful, independent, a wonderful example of a human being? If that’s the only thing holding you back, then don’t worry about it. You look how you want to look, a little ambiguity never hurt anyone, and it certainly won’t change the opinions of the people who matter.
We need to be proud of who we are, and accept that everyone is equal in their rights, whether it be the small issue of a haircut or the huge issue of marriage. Not everyone fits into the gender binary, and what’s between our legs doesn’t define our appearance or our gender. Some people will never question theirs and others will spend their lives doing so. So most of all, we need to be compassionate to people who don’t fit into society’s ‘boxes’.
So this is the voice of an androgyne. And I say we are all beautiful.

General Election Results

Hey guys,

This post was going to be about Disney but that post will go up next week…

As a Labour supporter I was obviously disappointed, but more so because of the future that the Tories will give us, higher tuition fees, privatisation of the NHS, increased usage of food banks and increased rates of homelessness.

I went to bed at 1am last night with Labour having 6 seats, Conservatives having one and Lib Dems (I think) having 1 seat, so needless to say I was hopeful…

But when I woke up it was a completely different story, Conservatives had almost won a majority and Labour having done not so well… All being said I’m over the moon UKIP only got one seat!

As I said at the start of the post, tuition fees are more likely to rise again making it even tougher for people to get into university unless they’re wealthy, I, not being wealthy, hate this, only recently have I decided I want to go to university so I haven’t been saving my whole life but one of the main things I liked about Labour was that they’d lower tuition to £6,000 (which is still a lot but it’s better than £9,000 a year) but I guess me going to university is out of the window!

The Tories are also probably going to privatise the NHS, I fail to see how this helps anyone, I mean the NHS is something Britain prides itself on, but the thing people seem to forget is that the NHS came in under a LABOUR government, not Conservative. Privatisation means many vital services such as CAMHS will be cut or have large fees, this is terrible because CAMHS help so many people and are vital to the country.

One thing that has made me happy throughout the election was #milifandom , I must admit I was a part of it… I love the way it made young people aware of politics and brought attention to how Murdoch is a bully and not to judge someone on looks. It also made people realise that young people DO know what they’re talking about when it comes to politics, even if they’re not of voting age(which I wasn’t sadly) and also inspired many young people to vote.

One thing Britain desperately needs is education on politics taught in high school PSE for example, I’m in a performing arts class full time, there are no PSE lessons in college so how am I supposed to learn about politics, this is one of the key reasons young people aren’t voting.

All being said and done, this election has made me realise that I want to make a change, whether that is run for MP in 2020 or start a charity, I know that that’s what I want to do with my life!

See you soon,

My Addictions

Hey guys,

The term “addictions” gets thrown around a lot these days and in this culture it’s hard to distinguish between addiction and obsession. I sometimes struggle to distinguish between the two especially as I have an obsessive personality (if I like something such as a band or TV show I will get ridiculously attached to it).

So without further ado, here is my list of addictions-

Pepsi – I don’t even know why I have this addiction but it’s safe to say it’s not going away anytime soon as I drink like a litre a day which I know isn’t healthy…. I’ve been told by many people but ah well I’ll live.

McDonalds – Maybe it’s the rumoured addictive additives or maybe it’s the fact I rarely had McDonalds till I was 12 and look at me now I cant go a week without it.

Fast food – Scrap McDonalds actually, I’m addicted to most fast foods, just not as bad as I am to McDonalds. I’m addicticted to KFC, Chinese food, Fish ‘n’ Chips, pizza and more.

TV Shows – When I watch a TV show I can’t just watch them casually, I have to binge watch them. Take what I’m watching now, Supernatural, the other day I watched a season in a day. That’s 22 episodes and 40 minutes each. That’s not normal is it?… This ties in with my video on fandoms, you can watch it here!

Anyway my view on addictions is that they’re not good but they’re a part of human nature and if your addictions aren’t damaging you or people around you, let them be.

Leave your opinion on addictions in the comments!

Review – Benefit Roller Lash Mascara

Hey guys,

Today I’ll be reviewing the new Benefit Roller Lash mascara, this is the first Benefit product I’ve used and I wasn’t really impressed by it, so I’m glad I got the tester one with Elle instead of buying the actual product!

The mascara claims to lift lashes although for my lashes even after curling them they just got weighed down by the mascara, secondly it claims to curl but even after curling my lashes they weren’t curled, my lashes also get really clumpy after using this mascara, in fact the only thing it lives up to on the packaging is that it makes eyes look more open (I have no idea how since it weighs down lashes, it must be some sort of special secret science thing). The mascara is quite good on bottom lashes though, which makes eyes look brighter and more open.

The one problem I had with the packaging on the tester (I have no idea if it’s the same on the actual product) is when you take the wand out of the tube is that it doesn’t take off the excess which makes it messy to apply.

Have a picture of my eye with the mascara on (it’s a terrible picture I know sorry) :

Blogmas day 4 & 5 | DIY Photostring & wall art quote

This is a 2 in 1 post so I counted it as 2 days so that I’m back on track with blogmas!

DIY Photostring
I’ve seen a few people do this but I did mine with a kind of twist ….
What you’ll need
6 pieces of string (multicoloured)
Hole punch
A selection of photos
Something to hold it up with like tape or hooks (I used duct tape)
How to make it
I used 2 pieces of each colour (pastel blue, pastel yellow and pastel pink) and tied a know at one end, I plaited it for a tiny bit but to be honest I got a bit bored so I left it haha, and then I punched a hole at the top of each picture and threaded them through the end of the string where there isn’t a knot and then tie it off when all the pictures are on, simple as that, then you stick it on the wall!!

DIY Wall Art Quote

This one took me a while because I picked quite a long quote

What you’ll need
A quote
Lots of paper
Sharpies(or any felt tips, but sharpies made my parents think I had actually paired on the wall)
Blu Tack

How to do it
First you’ll need to find your quotes and some writing styles, I did a different style for each word and used the styles I knew I could do well.
Then sketch out the quote with the writing styles you’re using and colour them in and outline them black
Then cut out the letters individually (I did this over 2 days) and attach them to the wall in order using Blu tack on each corner-y bit.
After mine was on the wall I decided to add initials of the person who said it.

That’s it for today’s blogmas

Blogmas Day 3 – A Day In The Life Of An Elf

Hey guys,

I know this is a day late but I’ll catch up soon, I promise!

The first post is a day in the life of an elf (I work as an elf so its my day!(sorry if I’m boring haha) )

8:30 – I wake up on a Sunday at this time and can barely keep my eyes open because its too early

10:30 –  I get to the shopping centre I work at, the grotto is based on Elsa’s castle and it’s amazing tbh haha.

At the grotto there’s 5 jobs for the elves!

The first job is taking the childrens names and ages (it’s also a good idea to check the gender to avoid giving the wrong present..) and write down if they want a picture with santa and take the money etc…

Then the second elf will look at the name and find the appropriate present for their age and gender and write the childs name on it, then take their picture with Santa if they paid for it, this can be difficult because a LOT of children cry!

Then the next elf will run the camera to the printer (if there’s only 4 elves in on that day the second elf does this) whilst the kids are still in there and return to the inside of the grotto, after which the fourth elf will wait for the picture to print (it often takes a while to print) and when the kids come out will put the picture in the card and give the kid a sticker if they want one and a competition form.

Then the last elf will stand around on the tombola which is pretty painful because no one buys anything at the tombola, it’s like 3 people an hour.

All the elves switch roles and I’ve only worked 2 days and this is my first job so its pretty brilliant

5:30 – I go home and eat and watch gossip girl till like 1am

Anyway, byeeeee!

I’ll catch up soon!

See you soon,
